Special Delivery: Leaving a Legacy

Updated: Feb 28, 2019

The Backstory:

I’ve already told you how I found out about this sculpture and watched a little of its creation in Dr. Salling’s back yard. Months later, he called to tell me that it was about to be delivered and if I was interested, I should probably arrive at the hospital at 4:30 AM! Are you kidding?

So…on June 13th, 2017, I arrived at New Hanover Regional Medical Center almost on time - at 5:00 AM - to see this most important special delivery! After it was secured on its pedestal, the sculpture was draped so that NO ONE could see it before its big unveiling! The very next day, The Circle of Life was dedicated! Even now, all I can say is - WOW!

A few last tidbits:

Applicants from four states submitted proposals to create a sculpture for the entrance to the hospital. Lucky for us, the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation selected William Salling’s proposal from those submissions. The Circle of Life is his largest sculpture to date but - wouldn’t you know? He has plans to create one even bigger! We’ll let you know!

ON LOCATION:

The Circle of Life is located right across from the main entrance to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. Since people are constantly coming and going at the entrance, you should look for a parking place nearby. For example, there’s a parking lot to the right once you turn into the main entrance off of 17th Street. From there, the sculpture is a short walk up a slight hill. There, you’ll find a fountain and benches where you can sit and reflect on this beautiful piece of art and its meaning.

The address of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center is:

2131 S 17th St, Wilmington, NC 28401
